Hamlet is a tough character to give a quick description of. In most basic terms, he is the Prince of Denmark, the son of Gertrude and the nephew/step-son of Claudius. Hamlet is generally seen as a thinker rather than a doer. Though he is spending time collecting evidence so the murder of his uncle is justified, he also spends a lot of time thinking about life, death, murder, suicide and other such existential ideas (see his "To be or not to be" monologue.) Hamlet is also a melancholy figure, often times consider death before life. However, I personally believe Hamlet is rather even-tempered (not rushing to kill his uncle on a ghost's say-so) and somewhat intelligent, trying to trap his uncle into admitting his guilt.
