In this chapter, Nick sees how important money seems to be to everyone in the novel. Everyone has a price, from the police commissioner who has given Gatsby a "get no ticket" note, to Daisy, who sells out for a $350,000 necklace to poor Myrtle who is bought off with a pretty dog collar. Gatsby, who grew up with no money, is forced to make up elaborate stories about how he was brought up in a rich family and has led a charmed life, to the point of even getting a medal from the country of Montenegro. In usual stories of the day, the young hero would work hard, overcome great obstacles and get the girl. In "The Great Gatsby" this picture is reversed. It seems that those with money use it unwisely yet end up at the top of the heap despite all their hollowness and greed.
