The style of this book is mostly narrative. Schlosser begins his "tale" with the tale of Carl Karcher, the founder of Carl's Jr. hamburger chain, and a pioneer of fast food. As he tells Carl's story, he integrates the story of American in the mid-1900's, allowing his narrative to slip into a more academic style in the recitation of history. Notice the difference between these passages, one focusing on Carl's narrative and the...

One thing I definitely took away from the book is how "wrong" the system of delivering meat to big restaurants is. The entire process is cruel, and unsafe. It's not just fast food that uses these slaughterhouses, it's many markets and other restaurants as well. I have tried to cut back the amount of meat I eat per week because of this.

Well before I read that book I had quit eating at McDonald's and became much more choosy about the choices I made...it began when I was pregnant with my first son and walked into Mickey D's for breakfast with my husband. Immediately after walking in I began retching at the overwhelming aroma of grease. We only eat out about once every other month, but we definitely think twice about where we eat...reminds me a bit of Sinclair's THE...

I can't wait until somebody does an expose on the megasupermarkets, like Walmart. Now there's something to be scared of! Where do they get their meat???

Yes and it made me so sad. I completely quit eating some things that I love because just thinking about it made me think how hard I would have to work that day in the gym. Now when someone asks me if I want to know the nutritional value of something I love I tell them emphatically, "NO!" I know if I find out and it's bad enough I'll never eat it again. :(

Oh, indeed. To the point where I'm pretty much starving now. Before I read FFN, my diet was built on the four holy pillars of fast food: Taco Bell, Burger King, Carl's Jr., and McDonald's. But now...now I can barely walk by those places without throwing up into my shoes. The problem is not so much the poor-quality, poorly prepared food, but the harmfulness of the fast food industry itself. The author exposes behind-the-scenes corruption,...
