The Indians of the pueblo
Summary
Bernard and Lenina stand below the mesa looking at the pueblo of Malpais. She feels uneasy in this place with the Indian guide. Drums begin a heartbeat-like rhythm as they walk and then climb to the top of the mesa. The Indians’ dark brown bodies are painted and decorated with feathers, silver, bone, and turquoise and their smell becomes stronger. Some carry snakes....
