It is the night of Bernard’s most important reception to show off the Savage, but John will not come out of his room. Bernard shouts at him, even calls him John, but to no avail. He finally has to announce to the guests that the Savage will not appear. Everyone leaves, indignant and feeling they have been tricked. All the old rumors about Bernard become more vocal.
